About Me

BIOGRAPHY

Todd Thorne resides in the Piney Woods of East Texas with his wife and two technophile sons. He's come to expect and appreciate labels of ‘dark, gritty’ as pertains to his writing. While short stories continue bubbling out of him, Todd is branching out into novel length fiction. His first, not surprisingly, is a dark and gritty sci-fi tale.

THE LONGER WINDED VERSION

I grew up on a steady diet of the sci-fi masters. Under the covers illuminated by flashlight, you might find the likes of Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein, Harrison, Van Vogt, Bradley, Niven, Bova, Zelazny, and many others delaying my evening rendezvous with the sandman. Intimate or vast, social or hard core tech, close to home or out far beyond the reaches of Known Space, I indulged. And dreamed, transposing the stories into my own visions of amazing plots and people. Oh, how I wanted to see those visions made real.

One way or another, I’ve always been telling stories. In middle school, a friend and I transposed Marvel and DC characters into our own, stick-figure comics. For a while, we even tried to equal their production rates, it seemed. By longhand, I wrote short stories of many genres, again attempting to match the tastes and interests of my circle of friends at the time. Then came typing class and the ability to capture words faster, which, I confess, did not yield better quality tales. In my case, it took the era of word processing to deliver the tools to enable the best balance of conceptualizing, architecting, composing, and refining that I needed as a writer. And so I focused, finally specializing—as the sages advise—on the stories that I wanted to write. So here we are.

My fondness for creating sci-fi, I doubt surprises anyone at this point. These days, I happen to like more of a YA slant on it and thus I find myself enjoying the works of Nix, Reeve, Pullman, and Westerfeld. Good company and influence for my muse too, which relishes the idea of pleasing a younger audience. It seems I’m trying to come full circle.
